FOR FAMILIES & CAREGIVERS

Help someone you love understand the heart operation ahead.

A cardiac surgeon and cardiologist independently review the complete record—so your loved one can understand the proposed operation, individual risk, and alternatives worth discussing before making a decision.

A CLEARER FAMILY CONVERSATION

Support starts with understanding the decision.

You do not need to become the surgeon, the record keeper, or the sole interpreter. A useful second opinion gives the patient and family a shared set of facts.

01

What operation is actually being proposed?

See the diagnosis, testing, and proposed procedure organized in one clear clinical picture—without relying on hurried notes or secondhand explanations.

02

Are there other reasonable paths?

Understand which open surgical, minimally invasive, catheter-based, and medical options may be relevant to your loved one’s individual case.

03

What does the risk mean for this person?

Review validated surgical risk models alongside the clinical details those models cannot fully capture, with missing inputs and limitations made visible.

04

What should we ask next?

Turn a complicated record into focused questions for the treating team, practical next steps, and a decision the patient and family can discuss together.

PRIVACY & PERMISSION

You can coordinate the process without taking over the decision.

Medical records are collected only after the appropriate authorization is in place. The patient’s voice, choices, and privacy remain central throughout the review.

  1. 01

Tell us who you are helping

A spouse, adult child, relative, caregiver, or legally authorized representative can begin the process and provide the patient’s contact information.

  2. 02

Confirm permission to access the record

When the patient can consent, they complete the required authorization. If you are a legal representative, the records team may request documentation of that authority.

  3. 03

Let us help with the records

After the appropriate authorization is in place, upload what you have or let the records concierge help request reports, notes, testing, and imaging.

  4. 04

    Join the conversation when invited

Consultation packages allow the patient to invite family members or caregivers, where appropriate, so the important questions do not rest on one person’s memory.

WHITEGLOVE Insights™

One report the patient and family can use together.

The complete record becomes a clear, source-linked map of the decision—reviewed by both members of the Heart Team and written for the next conversation.

01

The current clinical picture

The diagnosis, relevant history, completed testing, and proposed plan—organized clearly and tied back to the source record.

02

Two specialist perspectives

A cardiac surgeon and cardiologist independently review the complete case, then co-sign one written Heart Team report.

03

Individualized surgical risk

STS PROM, EuroSCORE II, and AATS are considered when applicable, with assumptions, missing inputs, and limitations shown.

04

Guideline-mapped reasoning

The proposed decision is placed beside current cardiovascular guidelines and the patient-specific details that make those guidelines relevant.

05

Options and tradeoffs

Reasonable surgical, minimally invasive, catheter-based, and medical paths are compared in language a patient and family can use.

06

Missing pieces and next questions

Incomplete workup, unresolved questions, and practical next steps are called out for the next conversation with the treating team.

HOW IT WORKS

Less record chasing. More useful conversation.

The process is designed for families coordinating care across offices, portals, and schedules—without asking you to prepare the clinical case yourself.

FAMILY & CAREGIVER QUESTIONS

What families ask before they begin.

Still unsure who should start, sign, or join? Request a complimentary orientation call before sending records.

Request a complimentary call
Can I start a heart surgery second opinion for my spouse or parent?

Yes. A family member or caregiver can begin the process and provide the patient’s information. Before medical records are requested or reviewed, the appropriate patient authorization or documentation of legal authority must be completed.

How does authorization work?

When the patient can provide consent, they complete the required medical-record authorization. If you are acting as a legally authorized representative, the records team may ask for documentation that confirms your authority. The team will explain what is needed for the individual situation.

What if my loved one cannot sign an authorization?

Contact the records team before sending medical information. The documentation needed depends on the patient’s circumstances and who has legal authority to act for them. The team can explain the next administrative step but cannot create or determine legal authority.

Can family members join the physician consultation?

Consultation packages allow the patient to invite family members or caregivers where appropriate. The patient remains at the center of the conversation, and participation is handled in a privacy-conscious way.

Who reviews the case?

Every case is independently reviewed by a cardiac surgeon and a cardiologist. They bring the operating-room and cardiology perspectives together and co-sign one written report.

Does the second opinion replace my loved one’s treating doctors?

No. WHITEGLOVEMD provides educational decision support and independent medical-record review. The report is designed to help the patient and family ask better questions and discuss the decision with the treating surgeon and cardiologist.

Do we have to collect every medical record ourselves?

No. Upload whatever is already available. After the required authorization is complete, the records concierge can help request the reports, notes, testing, and imaging needed for the review.

When does the 24-hour turnaround begin?

The 24-hour review window begins only after the complete medical record and required imaging have been received. If something is missing, the records team will let you know and can help with collection.

Do we need a referral or need to travel?

No referral is required. The review is completed remotely, so the patient and family do not need to travel for the second opinion itself.

How much does a family-requested heart surgery second opinion cost?

After your complimentary conversation, we email the package we recommend for your loved one, what it includes, and the secure next step. There is no cost to talk to us. Higher service levels add a live physician consultation, and Concierge adds Heart Team consultation and support through the day of surgery. WHITEGLOVEMD is direct-pay and does not submit an insurance claim.

Does WHITEGLOVEMD bill insurance?

WHITEGLOVEMD is a direct-pay service and does not submit an insurance claim. After the complimentary conversation, we email the recommended package and price so the family can decide whether it fits their situation.

What if my loved one has urgent symptoms right now?

WHITEGLOVEMD is not an emergency service. Call 911 or seek immediate local emergency care for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, new weakness, or other urgent symptoms.
